Your safari begins with a morning pickup from your hotel or Kigali International Airport. Leaving the city behind, drive eastwards through Rwanda’s countryside, where rolling hills and farmlands create a peaceful backdrop. After approximately 2.5 hours, arrive at Akagera National Park and check in at your lodge. In the afternoon, set off on your first game drive, exploring the southern sector of the park where you might encounter giraffes, zebras, impalas, and warthogs as they graze under the scattered acacia trees. Return to the lodge for dinner and your first night in the wild.
After an early breakfast, embark on a full-day safari across Akagera’s diverse landscapes. Travel north towards the open savannahs where large herds of buffaloes, elephants, and topis roam. Lions, leopards, and hyenas—recently reintroduced to the park—are now thriving here and may be spotted on your drive. The northern plains open up to expansive vistas, lakes, and woodland areas, giving you a rich mix of wildlife sightings throughout the day. Stop at scenic viewpoints and enjoy a packed lunch in the bush before making your way back to the lodge in the late afternoon.
Today starts with a peaceful boat cruise on Lake Ihema, the park’s largest lake. Glide past pods of hippos and crocodiles while water birds like kingfishers, herons, and fish eagles fill the skies and shoreline. This relaxing safari offers a different perspective of Akagera’s beauty and wildlife. After the boat cruise, return to the lodge for lunch. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure—relax by the pool, take a nature walk, or simply soak in the surrounding views.
Enjoy one last morning game drive as you make your way out of the park, keeping an eye out for any wildlife you may have missed. Exit Akagera and begin your return journey to Kigali, arriving around midday or early afternoon. Your driver will drop you at your hotel or the airport, marking the end of your Rwandan safari.
